Sustainable Development

In May, Fiskars Museum received the Good Travel Seal (GTS) certification. GTS is an environmental management system that evaluates companies and other actors primarily within tourism and the travel industry. The focus is on environmental and climate issues, as well as topics such as social responsibility, safety, and health. Read more about GTS here Green Destinations | Good Travel Seal.
We work to reduce our environmental impact by, for example, choosing locally produced goods whenever possible, sorting all waste, and using compost. In the garden, efforts to strengthen biodiversity can be seen, for example through our newly established forest garden and through the mechanical control of invasive species such as lupine and the Spanish slug. More information about the garden can be found here Hammarbacken Museum Garden and Garden History – Fiskars museum – Fiskarsin museo.

We also take climate change into account by, for instance, using only LED lights and watering plants with rainwater during the growing season. We are working on reviewing our electricity consumption, as two of the old buildings are heated with direct electric heating, while the third receives district heating from Fiskars’ wood-chip plant.
We collaborate with other local actors in the village and strive to use services that are available within the municipality. We treat employees and visitors equally and with respect, and we do our best to promote accessibility to our exhibitions and the rest of our activities. The customer service staff are also happy to share tips and information about other sights and services available in the village, so that our visitors can enjoy their stay in Fiskars for as long as possible.

We work actively to preserve cultural heritage by documenting, collecting, and presenting various parts of our local history: its objects, traditions, and values. At the same time, through various workshops and demonstrations of traditional crafts or historical methods, we want to show how we can still today make use of, preserve, and repair different materials. In this way, we hope to inspire a more sustainable lifestyle, as both consumption and the amount of waste we all generate have reached an unsustainable level in terms of the planet’s resources.
A certification primarily means that our operations have been evaluated and that we know in which areas we perform well and where we can improve. It also means that the work continues and that we are regularly evaluated by an external party. See our results from the GTS evaluation below:
